Bordeaux color is this season’s fashion hit. However, this is not true only in the world of fabrics and styles, but in the world of cuisine also. What is the first thing that crosses your mind when it comes to Bordeaux food? Beet, of course.
Red beet is a root vegetable which ripens in summer and fall. Apart from being very healthy, it should be consumed as much as possible during its season. Don’t forget a basic rule when it comes to fruit and veggies – eat only seasonal, but now find out why beets are considered the queen of vitality.
Bordeaux is “hip”
Why we like this color so much? Bordeaux color beets are endowed with comes from a pigment called betacyanin. It is a pigment which possesses free radical scavenging and shows antioxidant activities. As you probably know, free radicals have an important role in the aging process, diseases, and development of tumor cells. For this reason, beet juice is a powerful anti-tumor source. A study in Wahington has shown that betacyanin reduces the development of tumor cells in case of prostate and breast cancer for 12 %.
Beets are best to be consumed raw, the reason being betaine. Betaine works as a detoxifying agent in beet juice. Beet juice is loaded with vitamins and minerals, with a special emphasis on vitamin C and folic acid, relevant for pregnant women. It contains almost all vitally important minerals for proper body functioning. Most represented elements in beets are calcium, iodine, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. There is also silica (silicon dioxide), by some experts even regarded as calcium synergist, very important for bone health. Deficiency in silica has been linked to brittle nails, hair loss, skin problems etc. If you have any of these problems, remember – bordeaux is hip but not only on lips.
First aid with high blood pressure
Hypertension, known also as high blood pressure, is a common problem people fight with every day. Perhaps it’s hard to believe, but you can beat high pressure with beets! A recent research in London shows that only a glass of beet juice a day lowers blood pressure. Accordingly, 250 ml of beet juice significantly reduces blood pressure after only 24 hours due to nitrates beet contains. Furthermore, a research in Australia has shown significant lowering of blood pressure only 6 hours after consuming beet juice. However, if your blood pressure fluctuates, don’t exaggerate. One glass a day will be enough.
Athletes, it’s your turn!
Bordeaux is hip for you too. Numerous research conducted on this subject have shown that muscles use ATP molecules for their work, they are a sort of energy current. And beet juice has been reported to increase the athletes’ endurance for up to 20%. Simply stated, beets increased muscular endurance and reduced the body oxygen consumption. These remarkable results have been obtained after athletes had taken only 1/2 l of beet juice a week!
Anemia is a matter of past
How many times have you heard you should drink beet juice if suffer from anemia? Countless times, I’m sure. And there is a good reason for this. Beet juice contains iron, and other than that it is rich in vitamin C which helps iron absorption. Besides, as mentioned, it contains large amounts of folic acid (folate actually, folic acid is its synthetic form) which is good not only for pregnant women but for vegans too since folate, being a water-soluble B vitamin, is why vegans are at particular risk for developing a B12 deficiency.
Prepare yourself an energy bomb
Beet juice alone may not be a very tempting beverage to drink. However, you can add some foods to make it even better and prepare yourself energy bomb with plentiful of vitamins and minerals. Here is our suggestion: Take beetroot half, lemon half, one carrot and an apple half. Blend everything and if you like, add some water. If you crave something sweet, add a teaspoon of honey. Adding a one-inch piece of ginger root will help burn calories. All in all, this interesting beverage will undoubtedly become the holy grail of your vitality.
You can also make a beet salad. Grate it, add some salt if you like, lemon juice and Aceto blasamico. Astonishing salad!
Beet juice can also be used as an antioxidant face mask. Soak a cotton ball in beet juice and massage your face with it and keep on for 15 minutes. This will give color to your face, but don’t worry, this face mask is easy to wash off with make-up remover. However, given the intensity of the color, it’s better to do this when you have enough time, meaning, no important arrangements or similar.
Bordeaux is this year’s hit on plates too. Make sure you introduce this super veggie into your menu.
