The world in which we live makes us ask ourselves one thing each day just to live – what will I eat today? Trivial as it may seem, this is actually a vital part of everyone’s life, around which ferocious campaigns should be led, much more than for any other matter. Besides, the biggest absurdity of all is that despite so many discovered resources (food) in the world, almost billion people are hungry. Globally, around 1.6 billion tons becomes food waste, out of which 1.3 billion tons are edible!!! These data are more than alarming, just in Europe around 100 million tons of food is wasted each year, and certain estimates show that if some serious actions are not taken soon, these numbers will exceed 120 million tons by the year 2020. Another tragic fact is that up to 1/3 of all the food in the world gets spilled or spoiled even before it reaches consumer! It is truly a burning global issue of modern times, and though we like to praise our country as being blessed with all natural resources required for a high-quality life, we often do not act responsibly in that field. In addition, most people (in Croatia) work very hard for their money, so it turns out we don’t just waste food but our financial resources too, all due to bad food management. And when you add the effort, energy, cultivation, logistics and whatever other inputs are necessary to obtain the final product – food on our table – many of us will probably admit that they haven’t done (exactly) everything they could.
However, it’s pointless to blame anyone for wasting food, but ourselves. Starting from smart choices in our own, small household and setting an example to others can really make the difference. But the first thing we need to do is make a detailed food shopping plan and give more attention to healthy ways of food preparation. Don’t forget the saying “think local –act globally”.
It’s ironic that older generations are much wiser than us when it comes to food management, sadly, human greed and self-centered attitude have brought us to the point where we don’t feel like listening to those we hold responsible for “ruining our planet”.
All in all, you can always use our web page as a source of ideas on how to increase your home budget and at the same time eat healthy, gourmet-like food and above all – act globally!
